Core Functionality
Free Gravel Calculator lets users input multiple distinct areas for projects that combine different shapes, such as a straight driveway plus a separate parking pad or a winding path around a garden. Users can select shape type (rectangle, circle, or pre-known area value) for each section, then enter matching dimensions to get total area automatically.
The tool includes pre-set depth values for standard use cases: 2 inches for decorative gravel cover, 2.5 inches for walkways, 4 inches for patio bases, 6 inches for residential driveways, and 10 inches for drainage trenches. All depth values can be adjusted manually for individual areas if part of the project requires a thinner or thicker compacted gravel layer.
Users can select from 8 common landscape material presets, each with verified typical bulk density values: pea gravel, crushed stone, driveway gravel, gravel fill, limestone, river rock, decomposed granite, lava rock, and marble chips. The calculator converts total volume to US tons automatically for suppliers that sell gravel by weight. Users can also input custom density values if their quarry or supplier provides an exact measured density.
Optional fields for bag size and unit price convert the total material requirement into the number of pre-packaged bags to buy, and generate a rough total material cost estimate for direct comparison between bulk delivery and bagged purchase options.
The calculator uses standardized US and metric unit conversion rules with no hidden rounding:
Cubic feet = total area in square feet × (depth in inches ÷ 12)
Cubic yards = total cubic feet ÷ 27
US tons = (cubic feet × density in lb/ft³) ÷ 2000
Metric calculations use cubic meters from square meters × depth in meters, with final results still converted to US tons to match North American supplier standards.
Circular area calculation automatically converts entered diameter values to radius to avoid extra manual math.
Built-in Reference Data
The tool includes a full reference lookup table for common project areas that shows exact cubic yard and ton values at 2, 3, 4, and 6 inch depths for standard driveway gravel density, so users can cross-check small project quantities without running the calculator. It also publishes typical depth recommendations for every use case along with usage notes, such as that angular compacted crushed stone is required for driveways, and rounded pea gravel should not be used as a driving surface. It advises users to order 5-10% extra material to account for compaction, uneven ground, and spilled edges.
Target Audience
This tool is built for DIY homeowners planning small landscape or driveway projects, professional landscapers estimating material orders for residential jobs, and small construction teams calculating backfill or drainage stone requirements. No paid account, login, or download is required to use all core features.
